I came up with the melody for Crystal after a jam over 11/8 grooves.
The bass line was stuck in my head; it presented a fundamental building block for a jungle jazz kind of piece.
At the time I was right into experimental jazz and world music (and still am), that served as an inspiration for this piece.
With this infectious bass line going around in my head, the lyrics just flowed out onto paper one night. Once the lyrics were down, it was obvious that there was a 3 part vocal arrangement and an endless choice of rhythmic structure.
I decided to bring 2 drum kits in, with a 3 part lead vocal and guitar, Bass and Keys on the groove, in the studio we also laid down some Djemi (African drum) and hand claps.
The lyrics expressed how I was feeling at the time and reflected the positive energy that was being exchanged among my friends; playing this piece was a real vibe, a real exchange of positive energy...
It was an epic adventure recording this piece, I would have liked to have done more with the track, however due to time and finance constraints I had to move on….so we mixed it raw, and left the arrangement as it was played.
This track has been added to Time's Not Waiting as a little bonus.
lyrics
The question is within,
The answer that understands,
The voice of a rhythm,
The melody in your hands,
Radiate magic; know that you have it in your veins,
Feelin e-static, revealing eclectic minds unframed,
But double the magic to topple the darkness so untamed,
Do open the senses, and let all the light shining in.
Free, Feel….
Didn’t know what I was to say,
Couldn’t have spot the time today,
Couldn’t just watch you drift away,
Love is not just a game we play,
Didn’t know what I was to play,
Couldn’t just watch the time delay,
Wouldn’t have spot you drift away,
Love is not just a word to say.
Free feel….
Wishing upon atomic cell,
Tiny the things that time can tell,
Taking a fall that never fell,
Flicking a coin into the well,
Raising the stakes with every move,
Feeling the deepest bluest groove,
Riding the orbit of the moon,
Digging the feelings deep and true,
Free feel…
Free feel….
Wishing upon atomic cell,
Tiny the things that time can tell,
Taking a fall that never fell,
Flicking a coin into the well,
Raising the stakes with every move,
Feeling the deepest bluest groove,
Riding the orbit of the moon,
Digging the feelings deep and true,
Feel free,
Dream feel….
